Almost 05 30hrs into the second day of December. I know it is kind of late but better late than never. After a series of meetings today and talks, and finally post duty work; I think it is time for me to pass on the message. Well five and a half hrs ago, we had crossed first December, World Aids Day. The day of expressing global solidarity with patients suffering from HIV and AIDS. The day wherein the awareness of the rising numbers of people suffering from AIDS is brought to light, wherein the emergence of a pandemic brought about by HIV is highlighted on and above all the day we express our strong support to all those who suffer from AIDS, many being children. True, a lot of the care and support system to them lies in the hand of the health care system and distributors, but to prevent the rising pandemic a strong public support and awareness system is needed. Above all, they need rights, basic human rights. Join the cause- light for rights. Share the support, wear a red ribbon and go ahead and light the candle. Just tell one person. Spread the message. Spread the awareness.

Achoo!! Can’t help it! I am going through another episode of sniffles and sneezes. It started since morning with no triggers, unless the thoughts of cleaning up my room could be considered as a trigger. Since it started, as of now I have reached a record of twenty five in a row, finished an entire box of tissues and downed myself in three mugs of tea laced with honey and ginger (Help!! I am more of a coffee person). At least, I have not yet landed with a headache or fever. (And pray not, my fingers and toes are crossed!!) Hopefully it must another common cold, thanks to the change of weather. On the whole, should I crib about or be thankful for it?!! After all, I did get a break from the usual work hours ( it’s midday here) and gives me some more time with my music, my novels…and of course, with my laptop. From the looks of it, if the cold waves persist, it may snow sometime soon. Meanwhile, I have to grab another cup of tea, this time it’s laced with pepper and cardamom, before my cold gets too nasty to handle. I have to stop the writing now, because I can hear the phone ring and from the sound of it, it may be mom with another long list of homemade remedies. No choice but to pick up. Don’t want to listen to the music later!! Well here I go, with sheets of paper and pen in hand. Hope I won’t run out of ink!!!
What a week !! Post adventure trip resulted in a hospitalization that cut off me off from civilization for more than a week. Finally, am out, free !! In convalescence I am supposed to be, but the new found freedom off all that tubes and wires, not to be mention my daily dose of pokes and pricks, is too true for me to be lying down !!
At last, it’s over- my two day call in Paediatrics is over. Put 17 hours more and end of the post admitting chaos. It’s been a very hectic week with the viral epidemic going around. Well, m not going to post much. Anyways, being absent from my room for two days; resulted in my younger sister nearly filing a missing person’s report with the hospital authorities !! ( Nothing new in my situation!!) Well post call, I am still standing upright and nearly sane; thanks to the endless shots of tea and coffee. The thing about being on-call is that even if I am are able to catch a couple of “zzzzz….” in between, sleep won’t be so happy because, I know that any time I will have to drag myself out of bed and run to emergency again for another patient; in addition to the ward patients; if anything crops up over there. Thankfully, the ICU has got a separate unit on call. Finally, the adrenaline rush is over, for now. Got to hit the bed, and get ready for the next two day call. What makes it worthwhile is knowing that, one more child lives to make a difference.
With the newer fashion trends, seems like all the tastes are feasible for a person of size zero. Add to that, the media hype, the socialscenario and half of the world being overweight or obese, proper diet seems to have lost its value.
The latest art- “pill popping” is catching up fast. Multivitamins, B complex, calcium, Vitamin E, spirullina tablets, Vitamin A tablets, iron tablets…You name it, and then pop the pill. All these capsules and tablets are not the answer to the body. Half of these pills are not taken in the right manner. It’s not about how you take them, but about the regimes. Iron tablets have to be ideally taken between meals, and not with tea or coffee, and absolutely no phytates. Anyways, that is not what I want to bring to light here, but the fact that what had happened to the good ol’ mealtimes. All the daily nutrients are in there. In moderation, any diet can give you the minimum nutrients that you need.
All of these multivitamins and minerals, are found in the day-to-day foods. So these many pills are not to be taken. In fact, overdose can easily cause as many complications as being deficient of them. Most of these are not absorbed wholly. Allow, nature to take its course. Medical science dictated that only certain people need to take them, and let your GP’s decide that. Self prescription is not a wise idea.
Besides, food contains many more constituents, which can’t be substituted, like anti-oxidants, beta – carotenes and so on. Things that won’t be found in the variety of capsules, powders or pills marketed around.
The situation is different for expecting mothers, elderly, babies…As for children, a healthy diet is sufficient enough ( cod liver oil tastes yuck !!!). The whole point is having one piece of bread and popping the pills is not a good way of living. Not to mention the amount of finances going into this venture in the long run. Take your time and have a proper bite ( Nope not the fast food or whatever is within reach!!!).
So do think twice before you pop over the next multivitamin pill ? Do you really need it ?!
